When Jesus Came | ||
ABOUT THIS BOOK Today sermons are little read, but perhaps that is not to be wondered at, since so many pulpit addresses are emphemeral-they are topical, related to contemporary life as much as possible-and often prove to be without enduring substance. The idea of preaching eternities—as an old Scottish saying has it—has all been lost. This present title, When Jesus Came, is a book of sermons by a master of the sermon, Marcus Loane. One senses that books such as this one will endure when more topical writings will take up permanent residence on second hand book shelves. The Author's treatment of the incarnation, life, ministry, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus is a simple one, but at the same time profound. The sermons take us quietly and thoughtfully through the various phases and incidents of the most remarkable life the world has witnessed. It would be good for us to be quiet and sit at the feet of Christ, as this writer displays him to our eyes of faith. Taking time for this in our busy world of this decade may bring fine rewards: as many, perhaps, as to the congregation who sat quietly and listened to them from the lips of the author. The Most Reverend Sir Marcus Loane (1912-2009) was formerly Anglican Archbishop of Sydney and Primate of all Australia. For many years the Principal of Moore Theological College, Sydney, he travelled widely in Australia and overseas, bringing his theological, ministerial and devotional insights to many situations. His writing of books ranged over many decades.
